General Facts :
The Mountain Feist has a short and smooth coat; speaking of the coat, the coat colors include tri-color with spots: red & white, black & tan, blue & white, red brindle, black, red. The Feist’s head has a medium length muzzle along with a slightly rounded skull. The dog has small eyes and are dark colored. The Mountain Feist has wedge shaped ears which are set well on side of head. The ears are held erect/semi-erect.
The dog has a black and self-colored ( according to the coat ) nose. It has a medium length neck which is very strong. The dog’s topline is level and it has a well ribbed chest which is fairly deep. It has a strong and straight back just like the forelegs. The feet are compact and small-sized with thick pads and arched toes
Origin :
The feist ( “fice” or “fyce” in some regions and time periods ) dogs arrived a long time before the Rat Terriers were brought to United States. An interesting fact about these dogs is that Abraham Lincoln wrote a poem about them before the Civil War. George Washington wrote in his own diary about these dogs as well.

Height : Between 10 and 22 inches ( approximately 26 to 56 centimeters )
Weight : Between 10 an 30 pounds ( approximately 4.5 to 13.5 kilos )

The Mountain Feist’s tail is carried erect and set high. This is a very agile dog making him very good for hunting squirrel, raccoon, rabbit, bird or other small game. These dogs hunt using both scent and sight and are known to be very alert dogs. The dog comes in three different varieties: the Mountain Feist, the Pencil-tail Feist and the Bench-legged Feist. It is a very good hunting and companion dog.
A very important thing to know is that the Mountain Feist isn’t a breed, but a type because it is the result of mixing a terrier and a hound. Many people make the mistake of confusing this dog with the Rat Terrier or the Jack Russell Terrier. The dog’s body is a little bit longer than tall. The Mountain Feist is recognized by both the UKC and the NKC. These dogs are known to be very good with children but they feel good hunting in the wilderness.
