Squirrel Calls

Using a squirrel barker can improve your squirrel hunting efficiency. Many people state that the barker is the best type of call for squirrel hunting. If you will be conducting your hunts in new woods and you don’t know where the den trees or nut trees are located, using this type of call you will find out where are the hot spots. Another advantage this type of call offers is that it will stop the squirrels which are on the run. Also, you if happen to hear an incoming squirrel but you don’t have the possibility to see it, it is advisable to use the barker call; the squirrel will probably jump onto the closest tree and start barking at you.

Some barker products offer you the possibility to take the rubber bellows off the calls’ back; if you have one of these products it is advisable to make the call and after that scream so that you can make your call even more exciting. In most cases, squirrels will scream ( without barking ) so that the other squirrels will know where he is.

A squirrel makes 2 types of screams: one of them is the contented call which quite often is heard after a bark. Squirrels usually make this sound at dusk and dawn. The scream is quiet and slow ( similar to a cat’s meowing ); the other type of scream is the distress call which is when a squirrel makes after it has been caught by a predator. Once other squirrels hear that sound, they will re-locate. This type of call should be used after 9 a.m. because the squirrels have already eaten and they are either inside of hollow trees or lying up on their limbs.

The third type of call is the cutter call which should be used as follows: after you have shot the first squirrel it is advisable not to retrieve it but to maintain your position; after that start using the cutter call. Squirrels don’t usually know what has happened after the blast of a shotgun or a rifle and they will get frightened and will most likely run until they will find a hiding spot. This is why using the cutter call is recommended because once they hear it they will think that the danger is over and will probably start feeding again, thinking that everything is all right.

In order to make a cutter call you must move the plastic pallet down the screw type sound chamber of your cutter call; you must use the exact same rhythm you hear the squirrels make while they are cutting nuts. The call must be made lightly when hunting in an area which has soft nuts ( water acorns or oak acorns ). Louder calls should be made when hunting in a hickory ridge area.

Imitating the sounds made by a squirrel which is walking on leaves is also efficient but you must know exactly how squirrels move otherwise you will not have the expected success.
