Squirrel Hunting Techniques

Squirrel hunting is considered by many one of the most exciting and entertaining hunting activities in the world that is why more and more people are going on squirrel hunting adventures. Of course, in order to have a fruitful hunting experience, hunters must know some hunting techniques, tips and tricks about how to hunt these small animals. Finding this small-sized animals isn’t very hard as they are basically everywhere there is a tree that produces nuts: oak, beechnut, hickory and others as well, so we recommend having a look at these areas first. Moving on, here are a few techniques we have gathered from many years of squirrel hunting adventures.

Unlike the whitetail deer who gets scared and most likely starts running as fast as possible, a squirrel simply climbs a tree and hides. In most of the cases, they “forget“ about the imminent danger and they come back down from the tree, this will be the perfect time for an efficient shot. These treed squirrels can be taken down in other ways as well. If you plan on hunting with a partner, you can send your hunting buddy on a wide circular path around the tree so that you can create a diversion. The squirrel will most likely watch the moving hunter and will move around the tree to hide himself from your buddy, thus exposing himself to you. The hunter that is walking around the tree should always keep his face towards the ground in order to prevent stray shot from falling into his eyes.

Another useful technique that squirrel hunters have been using for years is: hang your coat on a nearby bush or tree and slowly make the above mentioned wide circle. The idea of this technique is that the squirrel moves around the tree, away from you, eventually sees the coat and most likely runs back to where you can spot it. You also have the possibility to throw sticks or rocks to the other side of the tree/bush so that you can scare the squirrel to your side.

In autumn time when leaves start to fall, walking in the woods without making a lot of noise is a rather difficult thing to do. A suggestion for this issue is to walk as quickly as possible through as much area as you can. The squirrels will hear you coming but due to the reason that you are not trying to sneak up on them like a regular predator they don’t think that you are a serious threat. This technique isn’t recommended for young hunters because the shots tend to be quick.

Another aspect squirrel hunters must take into consideration is that once you have shot a squirrel, others might come around. Once you have shot a squirrel it is advisable not to move your position for approximately 1-2 minutes as there is the possibility to kill other 2-3 squirrels that are coming towards the squirrel you have killed.

We hope that our techniques will come in hand the next time you will be on a squirrel hunting adventure and you will catch more of these small animals in comparison to your previous attempts.
