The size of the trap is very important. You need to avoid using small traps because take for example the gray squirrel, it has a large tail which can hold the trap’s door open and it will keep the door from locking giving the squirrel a chance to escape; you have to make sure that the trap is large enough to capture the squirrel.
Traps shouldn’t be used during the night because squirrels don’t feed during this period so your chances for catching a squirrel are slim. Setting a squirrel trap during the night will most likely be efficient for other animals like raccoons, skunks and cats.
The most important thing about trapping is the location because if you set them in the wrong direction, it won’t be efficient and you won’t catch anything. Scouting the prey for a couple of days, finding what routes the squirrel follows will help you to find out the most suitable trapping location. Traps are recommended to be set near a fence or a wall, in the vicinity of the location.
Baiting is another important issue regarding squirrel trapping. Many types of baits can be used: nuts, apples, cereal and popcorn. Many people consider the peanut butter to be the perfect bait for squirrel trapping. Squirrels are known to use their smelling sense to find food so it is advisable to use food which smells like something a squirrel likes. A few drops of almond extract on a piece of bread will be enough; as an alternative, anise oil can be used.
Once you have captured a squirrel they will defecate and urinate inside the trap so in order to avoid the risk of disease spreading, it is advisable to clean the traps meticulously after you have captured a squirrel. When you wash a trap, use bleach and rinse it well.
