Walker Coonhound

General Facts :

The breed has mobile and very powerful shoulders. In comparison to the head, the ears are quite large. The dog’s forelegs are straight and long. This dog is good with children and also he finds his place among other dogs. The best way to train these animals is by the power of example. Walker ’s feet are solid and compact not to mention well padded. The tail is set high and it is strong at the root.

Although these dogs are primarily used for hunting purposes they have proved to be very good companion dogs. Due to the fact that they are very fast, many experienced hunters affirm that they are the best when it comes down to squirrel and raccoon hunting. They also have a highly developed sense of smell and a unique howl. The Walker Coonhound doesn’t have road sense at all so they must be kept in a safe location.

Origin :

The Walker is a descendent of the popular English Foxhound. The breed started when a stolen unknown origin dog, known as “Tennessee Lead” was crossed in the early years of 1800 into the Walker Hound. The dog has not been recognized as a breed until the year 1946. The dog inherited his looks from his ancestors, the English foxhounds.

Dimensions :

Height : Between 20 and 27 inches ( approximately 51 to 69 centimeters )
Weight : Between 50 and 70 pounds ( approximately 23 to 32 kilos )

Additional Information :

This type of dog isn’t recommended for apartment living because they are too anxious to stay all day indoors and do nothing. Regarding their health, the breed is relatively a healthy one. Most of the Walker hounds are able to scale fences in excess of 6 feet ( approximately 1.8 meters ) so a suitable yard system is necessary so you won’t have any unpleasant surprises. They must be socialized at an early age.
These dogs are easy to train and make very good pets if they are well exercised. Also, they are eager to please, very intelligent and confident which makes them a great companion for the owner. Some people have the tendency to confuse them with beagles, the very large ones. Their life expectancy is about 12 years.
